Outline of Manhwa <5> 3. Division of Korean Manhwa by Media type (3) Jab-Ji Manhwa (Manhwa for magazine.)

(3) Jab-Ji Manhwa (Manhwa for maagazine.)

Editor's Note : mirugi is focused on 1990's Korean 'Jab-Ji' in this article, but there were some more in the past. mrkwang will write something about that before his talk starts. It's based on memory of mrkwang & Korean internet searching, so could be edited more in the future.

There were magazine for children, which had manhwa + other articles, started mid or late of 1960's. 'So-Nyun Joong-Ang' / 'Er-Kkae-Dong-Moo' / 'Sae-So-Nyun' were famous at then. You could find brief information about magazine for children from Korean wikipedia in Korean language. They had manhwas for children, but had another articles. Children liked manhwa, but they have to read some other cultural articles, so mixed up.

It was changed in 1982, when 'Bo-Mool-Sum' started releasing, all Manhwa / not text-based articles included. It was revolution for Korean children & Manhwa market.

And finally 'IQ Jump' (in 1988 from Seoul munhwasa) & 'So-Nyun Champ' 1(in 1991 from Daewon) appeared as weekly. These are what mirugi will talk about, manga-influenced magazines. Those were big in 1990's, even bi-weekly.brother 'Young Jump' & 'Young Champ' appeared. Those 'Jab-Ji' from 1990's got strong influence by Manga, even struggled to publish famous manga to boost up sales. But around 2005-2006, such magazines changed releasing period, as weekly to bi-weekly & bi-weekly to monthly, due to reduction of market. (Even 'Young Champ' became online only.)

'Young Champ' had most some of famous manhwa. - mangas,
as 'Ruler of the Land' (still going on) - 'Priest'2 (stopped releasing.)
But publisher Daewon stopped releasing 'Young Champ' through paper at Sep. 2009,
just online version is available now.

>>> mirugi's talk starts. <<<

'Jab-Ji Manhwa' was became top, when influence of Japanese Manga was high in Korea around 1990's.3 For media working - way of start, all are influenced by Japanese magazine system. Most of manga-influenced style manhwa are made in this period, and re-influence successors.

1970's born authors got influence from Japanese Animation & Manga through 1980's, started drawing Manhwa based on that influence. Most of exported manhwas are from 'Jab-Ji', which got influence from Manga.

Such Manga-influenced Manhwa were exported usually,
while other kinds of Manhwa were not introduced to abroad.

To our sad, 'Jab-Ji' market became smaller after 2000's. Very few survived, changed release period. Weekly became Bi-weekly, Bi-weekly became Monthly.

Magazine 'Wink' from 'Seoul Mun-Hwa-Sa' survived.
It was bi-weekly, and still bi-weekly! Very special case for Korean manhwa magazine.
It has most famous manhwas as 'Goong' - 'Tam-Na-Neun-Do-Da' - 'Choon-Aeng-Jun'4, that could be threason why.

'Jab-Ji Manhwa' is just part of Korean manhwa market, not so big at now. Even in US & Canada, there are some manga-influenced comics, but we don't think like "US comics are same as Japanese." In Korea, it's same. Please make sure Manga-influenced manhwas are just part of them.

Even if [Scott Pilgrim] is uber famous in US & Canada,
we don't consider all US comics are manga-influenced.

>>> mirugi's talk ends. <<<

  1. Editor's Note : Later it's changed as 'Comic Champ' [Back]
  2. Editor's Note : [Priest] started releasing from 'So-Nyun Champ',  moved to' Young Champ'. [Back]
  3. Editor's note : There were 'Jab-Ji' before 1990's, of course. However mirugi focused into 1990's, when manga style magazine got top portion. [Back]
  4. Editor's Note : All of 3 are made as TV Drama or planned to be made. Especially [Goong] is super famous, even exported to Japan & US. [Back]
